DANA brings change in weather

PROVINCIA DE CASTELLÓN – Today’s DANA, which mainly affects the northeast, the Valencian Community and the Balearic Islands, has left more than 30 litres of precipitation per square metre in Castellón. Heavy rain is also expected on Saturday.

Friday’s session concluded with records reaching 32 litres per square metre in one hour in Portell de Morella. Another municipality where a lot of water fell was El Toro, with 19 litres. Whereas, nearby, in Teruel, there was also a lot of rain and even hail. Vilafranca was the third place where it rained the most with 11.3 litres.

For today (Saturday), the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) maintains the yellow alert level (risk) in Castellón due to rain that can reach 30 litres per square metre in just an hour and possibly also hail. It is the third day that this notification is active in the province.

The high precipitation warning is aimed at the southern regions of the province, both on the coast and inland. The time slot it covers is from 2.00 pm to midnight. However, precipitation will be less intense than the previous days.

New DANA next week

Moreover, it has not the end of this DANA. Another one is expected next week with rain and lower temperatures. The weather will be very changeable from coolness and rain to sun and heat and vice versa. This will be the case in much of Spain as the meteorological autumn begins.

Storms in much of Spain

The week starts with showers and storms in the centre, east and north of the peninsula, in line with the weather this Sunday, according to the Aemet forecast.

From Tuesday, the instability will move to the east of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, with showers and occasional storms likely throughout the week in the Pyrenees, Catalonia, the Valencian Community, the south-east of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

Stable weather in the rest of Spain and rain in the north

In the Cantabrian area and western and northern Galicia, cloudy skies and generally moderate rain are expected throughout the week. In the rest of the peninsula, partly cloudy skies are expected, with no precipitation.

The week in the northeast of the peninsula as a whole is expected to be wetter than usual, according to the forecast of the European centre ECMWF.

Especially hot on the Mediterranean coasts

Temperatures generally drop between Monday and Thursday, and an upward trend begins on Friday. The week is expected to be warmer than usual for these dates in the Mediterranean areas, while it will be slightly cooler in the southwestern peninsula and the Canary Islands. In the Canary archipelago, temperatures will rise until Wednesday and then drop.

What is a DANA?

A DANA is an isolated depression at high levels. According to the spokesman for the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), Rubén del Campo, it is the result of the collision of a cold air mass at height with hot air from the surface, giving rise to showers and storms.
