BARCELONA – The Mobile World Congress (MWC) Barcelona 2021 will be one of the first major physical tech fairs in Europe since the corona pandemic. The event is set to continue for the time being. However, in recent weeks some big names have indicated that they will not be there.

Less than two months ago, it was enthusiastically announced that the well-known Mobile World Congress would take place. The event is held annually in Barcelona. However, as June 28 approaches, various international brands have announced they will refrain from physical participation.

On Thursday, Google announced it would not be present at the MWC Barcelona 2021. A spokesman for the American giant confirmed the cancellation to the Spanish news agency EFE. Google said that travel restrictions are the main reason that representatives of the brand will not present this year. Furthermore, other well-known brands announced last month they would not be attending the event. Such as British Telecom, Cisco, Ericsson, Facebook, Nokia, Oracle and Sony.

The Google spokesperson said they will continue to work closely with MWC Barcelona organiser, GSMA, and will support this organisation virtually. Google hopes to be back in person at one of the largest tech fairs in Europe in 2022.

Organiser, GSMA announced in February that it dared to take on the four-day event and proudly announced all measures that it would take to ensure the event as safe as possible. The Mobile World Conference Barcelona 2021 is set to become one of the first major physical tech faris in Europe since the outbreak of the corona pandemic. Last year, the MWC could not continue due to the pandemic. However, in 2019, the event attracted more than 100,000 visitors.
