PALMA DE MALLORCA – Since the German government removed the Balearic Islands from the list of “high-risk areas”, dozens of flights have been operating to the Spanish islands every day. Mallorca in particular receives a lot of tourists and has set up a Covid quarantine hotel as an extra measure.

The Balearic Islands’ regional authorities have named the Palma Bay hotel in Palma de Mallorca as a Covid quarantine hotel. This hotel accommodates tourists who test positive for the coronavirus while on holiday in Mallorca. Mallorca is taking this measure because of the large number of tourists that are flying to the island over the easter period.

Positive test despite measures

If you travel to Spain by air, there are a few things to keep in mind, such as submitting a negative PCR test result that is no more than 72 hours old. Before travellers leave for home, they must submit such a test certificate. During the stay, the holidaymaker may suffer from symptoms, for which they must be tested. If a traveller tests positive for corona during their stay or just before departure, they should be quarantined until they are no longer contagious and can return home.

Not just tourists in corona hotel

Currently, six tourists are in quarantine in this hotel on Mallorca; four from Croatia and two from Germany. According to the spokesperson for the regional administration, this hotel is not exclusively reserved for tourists. Currently, there five residents of the island staying there who cannot go into quarantine safely at home. According to the regional council, none of the people are seriously ill. Many of them are asymptomatic or have minor complaints.

Covid quarantine hotel for homeless people in Barcelona

In other places in Spain, tourists go into quarantine in their own enclosure when they test positive for Covid-19. However, extra measures have been taken for homeless people in various Spanish cities. For example, the Spanish newspaper El País wrote earlier this month about Hotel SB Plaza Europa in Barcelona, which offers shelter to homeless people who have tested positive and cannot safely quarantine with friends or family.
