MáLAGA – The Spanish city of Malaga and the Costa del Sol are seeing an increase in the number of people moving south from other parts of Europe to work there as digital nomads.

According to the two largest Spanish homebuilders Aedas Homes and Neinor Homes SA, this is because lifestyles and work habits have changed dramatically after the corona pandemic. That writes the international news service Reuters.

According to Aedas Homes, sales to foreigners on the Costa del Sol doubled last year. In 2021 it was still 124 units sold and a year later there were 248. Neinor Homes SA says about 40% of the young people taking long-term rentals in the city were foreign. That’s since the company established a rental division in 2020.

Property purchases by foreigners in the first half of 2022 in the Andalucia region, have increased by 62% year-on-year. This is evident from data from the Centre for Statistical Information of Notaries.

Digital nomads in Malaga

According to the city council of Malaga, a platform to help so-called digital nomads (www.malagaworkbay.com) has already been visited by more than 160,000 visitors by the end of 2022. Although the website was launched in February 2021, it seems to have not been updated for months.

Millions of employees were forced to work from home during lockdowns to contain the spread of Covid-19. Consequently, many companies have allowed the shift to become permanent. Therefore, employees are increasingly discovering they can now work anywhere. Moreover, why not in a better climate with more light and where the sun shines more often?

David Martinez, CEO of Aedas, says he has seen a spike in house sales to people from Poland and the Czech Republic. These are countries that are deeply affected by the war in Ukraine. Also, many homes were sold to Belgians, French and Scandinavians.
