MADRID – The municipality of Madrid has decided to bring forward the opening of the swimming pools due to the high temperatures that hit the city early this summer.
The pools will now open ahead of schedule, allowing Madrid residents to cool off as the early heatwave pushes the mercury in their thermometers to high levels. This decision comes as a welcome relief to the people of Madrid. Temperatures have already risen above 30 degrees Celsius and will certainly continue to rise until Friday, making cooling down a must in the heat of the city.
Heat action plan
The measure falls within the action plan for episodes of high temperatures that the community administration is launching this week. This includes measures such as adjusting school hours, specific supervision of air conditioning in social and health centres, increased metro frequency to avoid waiting on busy platforms, and the early opening of public swimming pools from May 13 to September 9. Normally the pools don’t open until mid-June.
Opening hours and prices
The city council has already announced the opening hours of the swimming pools. Several pools will be available daily from 11.00 am to 8.00 pm, from paddling pools to slides and diving boards, so everyone can enjoy swimming in Madrid. Pricing details have not yet been given. However, last year, daily entry cost €5 and a 10-visit card cost €40. Online sales are only possible on the day itself. It is therefore best to buy an online ticket in the morning of the day you want to go.
Precautionary measures
Although the opening of the swimming pools is a good thing for the residents of Madrid, the city council also warns against taking the necessary precautions. They advise residents to apply sunscreen, to drink plenty of fluids and to adhere to the safety regulations in and around the swimming pools.
