VALENCIA – On Thursday morning, students leave Mallorca on a boat bound for Valencia. These 165 students are now allowed to return home after the judge lifted their quarantine obligation. However, 74 students who have tested positive are left behind on the island.
Nearly 250 students were infected during student parties in Palma de Mallorca. Shortly after this source of contamination became known, the regional government of the Balearic Islands decided to accommodate the students. The positively tested, were sent to a corona hotel and the negatively tested student quarantined in their own hotel rooms.
More than 6,000 people in Spain in quarantine
Less than two weeks after these parties in the capital of Mallorca, more than 1,800 people have now become infected. Furthermore over 6,000 people are in quarantine in Spain after coming into contact with someone who tested positive.

There was a lot of fuss about the mandatory quarantine of these students among parents, the students themselves and in the Spanish media because these young people did not know where they stood. The court interfered with the quarantine obligation on Wednesday and decided to lift the quarantine obligation.
Judge lifts quarantine and students leave Mallorca
This ruling allowed the 165 students who tested negative to leave Mallorca and have been on their way to mainland Spain since this morning by boat. The students will arrive at the port of Valencia around 5pm and will be taken to their place of residence by representatives of the autonomous regions where the students live.
All this is done with strict health protocols to prevent possible infections. The Mallorca region has indicated that the young people should complete their quarantine, which started in Mallorca, at home. After this period of ten days, the young people must be tested again.
What happens to young people who have tested positive on Mallorca?
74 other students who have tested positive for Covid-19 must remain in quarantine in Mallorca. It is now known that 13 of the positively tested young people have been hospitalised, one of which is even in intensive care.
Mallorca regional board on appeal
This court decision was wrong with the Balearic Islands regional government as nine more young people tested positive in the last few hours before departure. Concern was also expressed that some young people have refused PCR tests. The court’s ruling goes against the health protocols that have been in place in Spain for months, according to the regional government. The regional government therefore announced that it would challenge the court’s decision. This is despite the fact that all the students involved are now on their way home.
