If ever there was a good excuse to enjoy some of Spain´s fantastic wines, today is it! Today is International Tempranillo Day.
Tempranillo originated in the Iberian Peninsula and most plantings are still in Spain. However, its popularity has spread to many other countries.
Red/black grape
The grape is the most widely cultivated red/black grape variety in Spain. It is also known as Tinto de Toro, Tinto del Pais and Cencibel among others. The name Tempranillo comes from the Spanish word, Temprano. This means early and is because this grape ripens earlier than most others in Spain. Furthermore, it is used to make full-bodied red wines.
Often, it is blended with another variety of grape such as Garnacha, Carignan, Cabernet, or Syrah, which increase its aging potential exponentially.
Wines to suit all tastes
However, if you do not have a good understanding of red wines, a Tempranillo is an excellent place to start. There are many different varieties, so you are assured to find some to your taste.
Tempranillo wine can be taken on its own or with almost any food. It pairs particularly well with grilled meats. So, it is perfect for a BBQ, or tapas, or even just some cheese.
