Highest increase in coronas infections in Spain since July

infections increase

MADRID – The number of infections is also rising in Spain. It is the highest cumulative increase in the number of coronas in a fortnight since the end of July. Nevertheless, the situation is still stable and Spain still remains the country with the lowest incidence in Europe.

However, now that 78% of the population has been fully vaccinated, this is no longer leading to an exponential increase in measures. The number of coronavirus patients hospitalised remains stable, as do the number of deaths and intensive care admissions.

Differences from July

Figures from the Spanish Ministry of Health show that the incidence has increased by five points since Friday, to 58 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Since the end of July the increase has not been so high. However, the situation is different now, when – due to the increase of 23 units – the number of infections reached 700. One day later, on 27 July, the fifth wave peaked at 701 cases. At that time, 55% of the population had been fully vaccinated; today, 78% have been.

Congratulations to Spain

According to the latest weekly report from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control, Spain is the country with the lowest incidence on the continent. The number is still at the level of July last year, after the national lockdown. The World Health Organisation’s Director for Europe, Hans Kluge, has congratulated the country on its handling of the pandemic. After his meeting with Health Minister Carolina Darias, he stressed the continued wearing of the mouth mask and the vaccination campaign.

Under control

Despite the gradual increase in infections, partly due to the delays of the long weekend, the pressure on hospitals remains very low. The percentage of beds occupied by corona patients is 1.52%, which is, within all autonomous communities, in line with the levels approved by the Interterritorial Council.

The proportion of ICU beds occupied by covid-19 is 4.41%. Almost all sub-regions are in the state of new normality or low risk, except La Rioja. This region is at medium risk with 16.98%.

Lowest number of deaths

The daily death rate from corona continues to fall. In October, there were less than 20; the best figure since early August last year. In October, 496 people died from the disease, according to data from the National Epidemiological Surveillance Network. This is the lowest monthly figure so far this year, pending developments in recent days.
