It is not only mainland Spain that is experiencing cold and snow: early Monday morning Mallorca experienced the heaviest snowfall in the past five years. And Ibiza was also coloured in white.
Due to the accumulated snow, some road sections of the Serra de Tramuntana, the highest part of the island, were closed in the early morning.
All road sections closed due to the accumulation of snow in Mallorca were reopened later in the day. However, drivers were advised to exercise caution. The area around Lluc was most affected by the snow. The pilgrimage site of Lluc was covered by snow, closing some access roads and making the monastery inaccessible. In the Monnàber tunnel in Fornalutx, up to 7 centimetres of snow accumulated.
The lowest temperature of -2.3 degrees was recorded in Serra d’Alfàbia (Bunyola) at 6.10 am. And at 4.40 am the thermometer showed -1.3 degrees in Son Torrella (Escorca). Also notable were the minimum temperatures in Can Sion (Campos) of -0.2 degrees, in Palma Universidad of 0.3 degrees and in Lluc of 0.5 degrees.

On social media, people went wild with images of the snowfall in Mallorca. Especially the pictures of the winter scene around the monastery of Lluc were shared by several users.
Also snow on Ibiza
Spain’s AEMET reported that minimum temperatures on Ibiza had dropped to -1.8 degrees in the town of Sant Joan de Labritja. The intense cold has caused hail in areas of Santa Eulària. And, furthermore, snow has also fallen, mainly in the municipality of Sant Josep.
Cold continues
According to AEMET, the cold temperatures on the islands will persist throughout the week. ‘The very low temperatures will continue for some time, as will the precipitation and snow flurries at low altitudes…. it is more common in January, but we do not experience cold as intense as this year’s every year’.
