GivingTuesday: the solidary and generous response to #BlackFriday and #CyberMonday

Giving Tuesday

The solidarity movement Giving Tuesday is calling for more solidarity again this year, following the consumerism that was massively promoted again for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

This year’s 8th edition of ‘Giving Tuesday’ will take place on Tuesday 29 November. In more than 80 countries, the movement promotes a society focused on citizenship, cooperation and mutual aid. This is done through donations and volunteering to benefit hundreds of organisations with the most diverse causes.

In Spain last year, €618,061 was donated on a single day to 253 projects from different foundations. This was especially for those dedicated to children and research and against social exclusion.

Increasing poverty

This year, the initiators highlight the special appeal for solidarity with the most vulnerable in the face of increasing poverty due to the cost of basic life products, such as food and electricity. Society’s response to the humanitarian crisis caused by the war in Ukraine generated more than €44 million in donations, from more than 600,000 people. The average donation was €62, representing an 86% increase in donations compared to the previous year.

Therefore, Giving Tuesday aims to continue this 2022 by “extending solidarity” among citizens, schools, foundations and businesses in all corners of the country. And not just on Tuesday 29 November, but every day of the year, as the Giving Tuesday platform already has more than 50 projects to inspire and solicit commitment….

The response of Spanish society in recent years to emergencies such as Covid, the volcano on La Palma and this year with Ukraine is an example to all. And this must continue especially in the light of the challenges posed by rising prices, which is why they call for mobilisation and unity to continue giving support to NGOs, foundations, hospitals, research centres and social organisations, as in the past seven years.

What is Giving Tuesday?

Giving Tuesday is an open movement in which any person, family, foundation, social organisation, public institution, school, university or company, neighbours, shops and restaurants in the neighbourhood can participate through the platform’s projects, available on the website ‘www.givingtuesday.es‘. The actions can be shared on social networks with the hashtag #GivingTuesday.

This initiative is possible in Spain thanks to the support of UNHCR, Asociación Española de Fundaciones, Anesvad, Cruz Roja Española, Educo, Fundación Josep Carreras contra la Leucemia, Mi Grano de Arena and Hospital Vall d’Hebron as initiators, along with support from Salesforce and StockCrowd.
