CACERES – The award-winning HBO series Game of Thrones settles in Cáceres. The Spanish city will become the European film base. Furthermore, the production team of the blockbuster series is already largely based in the city. This is good news for the World Heritage City of Cáceres.
Members of the HBO production team are staying at local hotels and have contacted local companies to provide technical assistance. The American fantasy television series has had its technical office in the city since July last year. And, according to sources of the production company, will remain there for a long time because “Cáceres is the European base for filming”.
Game of Thrones
‘Game of Thrones’ will not officially start filming until October. However, the economic impact is already being felt. Sources close to HBO confirmed to the regional newspaper El Periodico de Extremadura, “It involves complex shots, so there is a need for many technicians and other film experts.”
Episodes of ‘House of Dragons’ will be filmed in Cáceres itself, as announced on June 30 by Luis Salaya, the city’s mayor. Shooting started in April and the actors are expected to arrive in Cáceres this autumn. The production house Fresco Films, the link in Spain for the production, has also chosen locations in Trujillo, another World Heritage city in Extremadura.
Historic city centre
Moreover, it is the second time that the famous television series has chosen Cáceres as one of its locations. In 2016, several episodes of the seventh season were shot in the historic city centre. That same year, the production team travelled to Los Barruecos in Malpartida de Cáceres to capture that same season’s epic battle.
Then, in December 2016, two days were filmed in the monumental city. As a result, the Arco de la Estrella, the Plaza de Santa María, the Cuesta de la Compañía and the Plaza de las Veletas became immortal and are frequently visited by fans.
Trujillo Castle
Earlier, Malpartida de Cáceres hosted all teams for the shooting of the big battle. These took 23 days. and Trujillo Castle was the first filming location in Extremadura. Also, the bloody conflicts of the Lannisters, Starks, and Targaryens were fought with the province of Cáceres as the backdrop.
However, the filming of ‘House of the Dragon’ is not going smoothly due to the world health situation. Filming was halted last month after a production member tested positive for Covid-19 while filming scenes in the UK.
Game of Thrones is the most-watched series in history. The fantasy television series is based on the books in the series The Song of Ice and Fire by American author George R.R. Martin.
