DENIA – Sunday evening’s waterspout in Dénia did not come as a surprise after Aemet had already warned about flooding with code red. It rained most heavily around 11.00 pm on Sunday.
The heavy rain left more than 80 mm of water in 12 hours, according to weather institute Aemet. In Xábia it was 65 litres per square metre. The images of the immense waterspout are spectacular. In a few minutes, the dry streets were flooded. Even in areas that are rarely flooded. Few districts of Dénia remained free of water. The centre was the hardest hit. A walk through Marqués de Campo street and adjacent streets were impossible last night. The road and sidewalk were both completely flooded.

The surrounding streets, such as Sandunga, also temporarily turned into raging rivers. A total of 12 streets were flooded. The port of Dénia was also temporarily inaccessible. During the morning, the rain stopped and the situation in Dénia normalised and little by little.
The fire brigade performs 13 times
The firefighters had to carry out up to 13 interventions from 11.00 pm on Sunday until 7.00 am on Monday, 11 in Dénia and the other two in Xàbia. Sources from the Alicante Provincial Fire Brigade Consortium have indicated that the troops mainly focused on draining water from the basements of homes and establishments, as well as tasks to secure public roads.
Remarkable Quantities
This episode came after a day of already remarkable amounts of rainfall. According to data from the regional weather institute, Pego received the most rain, with almost 204 litres per square metre. In Ràfol it was more than 181 litres, in Gata de Gorgos there were 128. In Orba also more than a hundred litres fell and 111.8 in l’Atzuvia.
