Five injured by falling rocks on way to Sierra Nevada ski resort

GRANADA – Five people were injured Sunday morning by falling rocks on the A-395 road, which runs through the Sierra de Güéjar (Granada). Four vehicles were damaged and the road was closed for a while.

This was reported by the 112 emergency centre and the Guardia Civil. The falling rocks occurred after a landslide shortly before noon on Sunday. 112 reported that several citizens called just before noon to report a landslide in which several people were injured. Four vehicles were also damaged.  

Emergency services at the scene 

The Guardia Civil, fire brigade, health department personnel, civil defence, local police, and a unit of the national police were at the scene. A landslide had crossed the road practically from left to right. The A-395 road was cut off at kilometre 16 in both directions and emergency services contined to work in the area with heavy machinery to remove the stones. The landslide occurred at a point very close to a restaurant, which was evacuated as a precautionary measure.

Diversion 

On Sunday afternoon, the Guardia Civil also closed the A-4030 running through Güéjar Sierra, at kilometre marker 7, to traffic. This was as a precautionary measure. The authorities hoped to reopen the road yesterday. However, a Tweet this morning from Emergencias112 states the Carretera de la Sierra de Granada , A-395 at kilometre 13 is still cut off due to the landslide. The A-4030 in Güéjar-Sierra (kms 0-7) .  They continue to advise extreme caution, and in case of any emergency, call 112.

According to the Polica Local in Granada, due to the road closure because of the landslides on Carretera de la Sierra, traffic is being diverted through El Purche.

Injured 

The emergency services confirmed that five people were injured of varying degrees and evacuated to the San Cecilio Hospital. It involved a 4-month-old baby, a 2-year-old boy, two women aged 36 and 60 and a 65-year-old man.
