Conde Nast Traveller asked its readers to vote on Europe’s friendliest cities, four Spanish cities made the top 16. Which Spanish cities made the list?
Many of Europe’s cities are judged on their monuments, architecture an art scene, but for travel to be totally enjoyable the friendliness of the locals is key. Four Spanish cities made the grade, and as well as friendly people have all the other ingredients to make a memorable trip.
In alphabetical order, we look at the Spanish cities voted some of the friendliest in Europe.
Bilbao, Spain
In the north-west of Spain, Bilbao has risen from fishing port to one of the most interesting, and friendly, places in Spain. Part of the Basque Country, its unique culture and language make it intriguing from the start.
Add to that the Guggenheim Museum, beautiful Old Town and picturesque beaches, and a trip to Bilbao should be on the cards for your next city break.
Cordoba, Spain
Andalucia is burgeoning with incredible cities. What makes Córdoba so special, is its size and the wonderful welcome you receive there.
From the Patios festival in May – when locals welcome you into their courtyards with wine and song – to the restaurants and bars serving traditional food with a smile, this is a city that pulls at the heart strings. And all against a magnificent architectural and historic backdrop.
Salamanca, Spain
It’s probably the university vibe that earned Salamanca the well-deserved vote. It is familiar and welcoming, with an almost endless supply of interesting places to visit. It is charming and hums with the vibrancy of student life.
Walk the cobbled streets and squares and soak up the atmosphere in the Plaza Mayor.

Toledo, Spain
Around an hour from Madrid, is the incredible city of Toledo. History oozes from the cobblestones and walls; and when you sit down at a tucked away bar to take it all, you’re made to feel at home.
