FOOTBALL – The knockout stages are now over. England are through to the Euro 2020 quarter finals after their 2-0 victory over Germany at Wembley.

This is the first time England have beaten Germany in a major football tournament since they won the World Cup. That was in 1966 – 55 years ago!

England´s manager, Gareth Southgate would have had bittersweet memories of his penalty miss against Germany as a player at Euro96. The past can´t be changed, but he has helped guide his squad to the final eight.

Euro96 team-mate, Alan Shearer tweeted, “Gareth, I have never looked at you once and blamed you for that penalty miss 25 years ago. I look at you and feel proud”.

Sterling on top form

The first half of the game was tense but with no goals for either side. In fact, the first goal didn´t come until 30 minutes into the second half. Another superb effort from Sterling put England one goal up, and then Harry Kane ended Germany´s hopes by scoring a second just before full time in the 86th minute.  On fire Sterling has scored three of England’s four goals in Euro 2020.

England’s quarter-final game against Ukraine is in Rome on Saturday with a 9pm kick-off.

England fans should not travel

Travelling England fans have been warned they will not be given access to the stadium even if they have a ticket.

As stated by the Italian Embassy in London “As the England-Ukraine football match approaches this Saturday, we would like to highlight that, according to the current Italian legislation, anybody who has been in the UK in the previous 14 days, irrespective of their nationality or residency will not be admitted to the stadium, even if they have a ticket.

Only those who can prove that they have arrived in Italy at least six days previously, have observed five days of quarantine, and have taken a post-quarantine Covid-19 test with a negative result will be allowed into the Stadio Olimpico.

Being exempt from quarantine in Italy for any legal reason, will not translate into permission to enter the stadium. For example, travellers who are transiting through Italy for less than 36 hours or visiting briefly for work reasons are not required to quarantine, but they will not be permitted to enter the stadium.

Anyone who is found to be failing to observe quarantine will be punished as laid down by the law.

Ukrainian fans face the same restrictions because all non-essential travel from Ukraine to Italy is banned under Italian law.

Spain and England both through to Euro 2020 quarter finals

Prior to England´s game on Saturday against Ukraine, Spain face Switzerland on Friday. Should both Spain and England win their matches, they will not play against each other in the semi finals. The semi finals will take place on July 6 and 7.
