Following the recent road safety campaign during the Semana Santa holiday, the DGT highlighted that cyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users.
As reported by the Junta de Andalucia, on Monday morning at around 6.40 am, a lorry collided with a cyclist on the AP-7/N340 road.
Emergency services
A driver alerted the emergency services that an incident had taken place between Puerto Banus and Marbella at km180.
The Traffic police and the 061 Health Emergency Centre were quickly activated. However, the cyclist had already died at the scene.
Vulnerable road users
The DGT published figures for fatalities on Spanish roads in April this year. During this month alone, there were 99 deaths from 90 accidents. This is 19 more deaths than the previous year. Furthermore, almost 40% (38) were vulnerable road users.
With this in mind, the DGT focused part of the new traffic law on cyclists, whom it considers the most vulnerable users of the road. Therefore, these measures are to protect them. However, that does not exempt them from responsibilities
Rules that cyclists must comply with
On Twitter, the DGT reinforced the following 3 mandatory rules that cyclists must comply with;
- it is mandatory to signal manoeuvres: turns, changes of direction and lane.
- in the city and on the highway, it is advisable to use bike lanes if they are available.
- cyclists are also included by the maximum level of blood alcohol.
Recent accident
Our condolences to the family and friends of the cyclist who lost his life on Monday. And our thoughts are with the lorry driver, other road users and emergency services that may have suffered trauma at the scene.
