Current corona restrictions in Spain

MALAGA – The decrease in the number of new infections registered on Wednesday also continued last Thursday. This seems to have brought the upward trend to an end. However, various restrictions are still needed to stabilise the favourable trend.

Too much optimism is therefore premature, because all autonomous regions in Spain are still in the ‘extreme risk’ phase. This means curfews, perimeter closures and maximum group sizes are still the order of the day for the time being. Also, the pressure on Spanish hospitals is still great. But what is the current status of restrictions in the various autonomous regions?

Canary Islands

The regional government of the Canary Islands has been given the least freedom in the corona policy to be pursued by the regional supreme court. The request for a curfew was previously rejected. And on Thursday the judge decided that no negative test proof may be requested for access to the catering industry.

The catering sector in this region had lodged an objection against the proposed restrictions of the regional council and was therefore ruled in the right by the court. Nor has the judge approved that the nightlife will be closed between midnight and 6.00am and that there is a maximum visitor capacity of catering establishments of 50% (inside).

The only measure in this region is to show a covid certificate or negative test result of up to 72 hours old on arrival on one of the islands. The same goes for national tourists. This applies until September 30.

Catalonia

The Supreme Court of Catalonia has approved an extension of curfews in 163 municipalities of the region, including Castell Platja d’Aro. This applies from 1.00am to 6.00am and will last until at least 6 August.

The maximum group size of 10 people and closure of the nightlife at 0.30am in this region has also been extended for a third time.

Cogesa Expats

Murcia

The district council of Murcia has also received approval for the proposed measures. This is a ban on social gatherings between 2.00am and 6.00am. Outside this time frame, a maximum group size of 10 people applies. These measures will remain in effect until August 27.

Navarra

In Navarre, at least until August 5, a curfew is in effect on weekends and public holidays. At least until 2 September, a maximum group size of 10 people applies throughout the region. It is also not allowed to continue regional festivals and bullfights in Navarre.

Andalucia

Andalucia’s Supreme Court has approved the regional administration’s application to introduce a curfew in the municipality of Montoro (Córdoba) between 2.00am and 7.00am. This will remain valid until at least next Thursday. The judge has not yet ruled on the requested curfew for the municipalities of Marbella and Estepona.

Asturias

The regional administration of Asturias is still awaiting a judge’s decision on a curfew in the eight municipalities with ‘extreme risk’, including Gijón and Oviedo. If the curfew is assigned, it will be from 1.00am to 6.00am. The maximum group size outside is 10 people (excluding guided cultural tours) and six people inside.

Extremadura, Cantabria and Aragon

The Supreme Court of Extremadura has approved a perimeter closure of seven municipalities in the region. These are Oliva de la Fontera, Quintana de la Serena, Bienvenida and Villanueva del Fresno in the province of Badajoz and Losar de la Vera, Hervás and Miajadas in the province of Cáceres.

Cantabria is still awaiting a judge’s decision to extend the curfew for another fourteen days, between 1.00am and 6.00am in 70 municipalities of the region. That is 17 more than there is now.

Aragon’s regional government has appealed the judge’s decision to reject the request for curfews in Huesca, Jaca, Barbastro and Monzón.
