PALMA – The covid restrictions on Mallorca tighten as a new wave of infections hits the island. New restrictions apply for the period from January 12 to January 26.

Covid restrictions

The authorities recognise the restrictions are ‘very difficult’, but also as ‘urgent’. Gyms and spas need to lower the blinds. In large shopping centres, only shops that sell basic products such as foodstuffs, cleaning products, or medicines can open. Hotels, restaurants, and cafeterias can only sell take-away or home-delivery meals. Restaurants and bars must remain closed, which also applies to their terraces.

The health situation on the island is such that even the large companies affected by the new measures have shown their understanding. Although they demanded extra financial support for the most affected sectors.

The covid restrictions in Mallorca also apply to Ibiza. Government spokesperson Pilar Costa said, “What we want is for people to maintain a minimal and essential activity during these fifteen days.”

New wave affects businesses and individuals

While businesses are having to close their doors again, the effects are felt far and wide. Staff will find they are back on ERTE (furlough scheme), or if self-employed with minimal, if any, financial support. Add to that, the mental health issues that the stress of closing businesses has on everyone concerned.
