It has been an exciting week in for Spanish football and this continues as the final four battle it out in the second leg of the semi finals of the Copa del Rey. The winners on Wednesday and Thursday will face each other in the final in April.
Sevilla v Barcelona
Sevilla took on Barcelona yesterday at home in La Liga. Sevilla went into the game having the upper hand. As previous clashes saw Barcelona hold onto a draw at home in October, and more recently at The Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán Stadium in Sevilla, Barcelona suffered a first leg defeat in the Copa del Rey semi-final and lost by two goals.
However yesterday, Lionel Messi and Ousmane Dembele filled the attacking spots for Barcelona with Griezmann on the bench for the entire game.
La Liga
Barcelona turned the tables and this time they won by two goals. The first from Dembele and then Messi scoring to complete their 2-0 win. Currently FC Barca sit 2nd in La Liga table with Sevilla in 4th position. Athletico Madrid still hold onto top place, 2 points ahead and with 2 games in hand. Real Madrid is in 3rd position. Both Real Madrid and Sevilla have one game in hand. With only 7 points between 1st and 4th in La Liga, there is still everything to play for.
Copa del Rey
The final four will play this week on Wednesday and Thursday for a place in the final which will take place at el estadio de La Cartuja en Sevilla.
Barcelona and Sevilla will clash once again on Wednesday in the 2nd leg semi final of the Copa del Rey. This time Barcelona is at home at Camp Nou. If Barcelona have a chance of qualifying for the final, they must win by more than 2 goals.
The other semi final takes place the following day on 4th March. This time Levante v Athletic Club at Levante´s home ground – Ciutat de València. The teams are 1-1 on aggregate. If, on Thursday after the 90 minutes has ended, both teams remain 1-1 on aggregate, the team scoring away, is declared the winner, if however, this game produces a score draw, the away goals will count as double. Furthermore, if both teams have the same count, the match will go to extra time. This will be for 30 minutes. If after extra time, there is no winner – it will revert to penalties.
Levante v Athletic Club
On Friday, Levante and Athletic Club clashed in La Liga, but again the game ended 1-1. Levante ended a four-game winless run last time out with a 2-0 win over La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid. Levante Manager, Paco Lopez’s side played against Athletico twice in the league last week. They won once and drew meaning they gained four points out of a possible six. Athletic have drawn five of their last six games. They won against Cadiz who are struggling in 15th place in La Liga.
The results of the recent La Liga games between the final four Copa del Rey semi-finalists have the makings of exciting matches in the week ahead.
