GLASGOW – The UN Climate Change Conference takes place at the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre in Glasgow from October 31 until November 12. The event is called COP26 (conference of the parties) and it is now in its 26th year.
Just under 200 world leaders are expected to attend the UK event. And Spanish Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez is expected to be the first head of government to speak on November 1. The Summit, which was scheduled to take place in Glasgow in 2020 was postponed because of the coronavirus pandemic.
Temperature
Sánchez will be joined at the summit by Teresa Ribera, Vice President, and Minister of Ecological Transition and Demographic Challenge. Ribera was quoted on the official Twitter account of the British Embassy in Madrid. “Glasgow is the next opportunity to say loud and clear that we are committed to preventing that average temperature from exceeding 1.5 degrees. A fundamental reference of the Paris Agreement. “
COP26 goals
According to the official website, COP26 has the following goals;
- Secure global net-zero by mid-century and keep 1.5 degrees within reach
- Adapt to protect communities and natural habitats
- Mobilise finance
- Work together to deliver
Working together
COP26 will bring together political leaders, companies, and organisations, as well as individuals. Moreover, Spain´s largest bank, Santander is also working hard to make the move to a greener economy. As such, they are taking part in the UN´s global summit to fight climate change. Furthermore, their executive chairman, Ana Botín, will speak at the event to stress the need for more sustainable economic measures.
Currently they get involved in beach cleans throughout Spain as part of the Plan Natura initiative. But they also have their own goals as a business. Consequently, these goals are detailed on their website as follows.
- continue to aid the transition to a green economy
- commit to power all our buildings with electricity from renewable sources by 2025
- mobilise €220 billion in green financing between 2019 and 2030
- be carbon neutral (NetZero) by 2050
