WEATHER – The northern autonomous regions of Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Catalonia, and Navarra have received a code yellow because of snowfall. In Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia, and the Basque Country there was also cause for a weather alarm. Sea waves of 4 to 5 metres high are expected.
Because of the blanket of snow, which can be up to 10 centimetres thick in the Pyrenees, and the wild state of the sea along the Cantabrian coast, a Code Yellow Weather Alarm was in force for eight autonomous regions on Monday. This was reported by the Spanish weather service AEMET.
Snow
In Aragon, Asturias, Castilla y León, Catalonia and Navarra, the weather alarm with code yellow was activated because the snowfall in the Pyrenees of Huesca and in the Val d’Aran, a valley in the Pyrenees of Lleida, led to a layer of up to 10 centimetres thick, at altitudes between 900 and 1,000 metres. In the Castilian provinces of Burgos, León and Palencia, the snow reached heights of up to 5cm, above 1,000-1,200 metres. This was also the case on the mountain tops of Asturias and Navarre.
Rain
During the day, the passage of an Atlantic front led to clouds with rain and showers in Galicia, Cantabria and parts of the Pyrenees.
Rainfall was heaviest and most persistent on the east coast of the Basque Country and in the north of Navarre. There were also locally heavy showers in the northeast of Catalonia.
Storm at sea
Meteorologists predict stormy weather at sea in the regions of Asturias, Cantabria, Galicia and the Basque Country. With wind force 7 and waves between four and five metres high. Reason enough to declare a code yellow in these areas as well.
Despite the code yellow, AEMET reported there was no meteorological risk for the population in general. However, there might be a risk for some specific activities, which were not specified.
