BARCELONA – According to a recent study, Catalans spent an average of 58% of their salary on rent in 2022. The average monthly rent for a home in the region was €864, which represents a 6% increase from the previous year.

The data arose from a study, conducted by the Spanish National Statistics Institute (INE). It analysed the economic situation of households in Catalonia. El Periodico writes the study also revealed that the average salary in Catalonia in 2022 was €1,485 per month, meaning that almost 60% of a typical Catalan’s monthly income was going towards paying rent. This figure is considerably higher than the national average, which stands at 42%.

High demand for rental housing and lack of available properties

The report suggests that the high demand for rental housing and a shortage of available properties have led to a significant increase in rental prices in Catalonia. This has made it increasingly difficult for many households to afford their rent, with some even having to make sacrifices in order to meet their monthly payments.

The Catalan government should take action to address the housing crisis

The findings of the study have prompted calls for action from political parties and housing activists, who are urging the Catalan government to take measures to address the housing crisis in the region. Suggestions include increasing the supply of social housing and regulating rental prices.

Issue of affordable housing as major topic of discussion

The issue of affordable housing has been a major topic of discussion in Catalonia in recent years, with many families struggling to find affordable homes. The results of this study are likely to add fuel to the debate and put pressure on the authorities to take decisive action to address the situation.
