SEVILLE – Beer producer Heineken-Cruzcampo expresses “great concern” about the impact of the transport strike on its activities in Spain and the catering industry and shopping centres throughout the country.
Since Monday 14 March, many truck drivers who work as freelancers or for SMEs in Spain have been on strike. The indefinite strike was declared by the Platform for the Defense of Road Freight Transport. Due to a lack of agreement, the end is not yet in sight.

The brewer with headquarters in Seville says if the strike continues, it will have to stop the production of beer. “If the situation continues like this, the brewery will not be able to supply its products to shopping centres, bars, and restaurants. Nor will we be able to stock up on raw materials because of the violent pickets that hamper Heineken Spain’s normal business operations,” the brewer warns on the eighth day of the strike in the transport sector for the self-employed and SMEs.
Governments must step in
Faced with this complex situation, Heineken “actively calls on governments to guarantee the freedom of movement of carriers who do want to continue working, while respecting the right to strike of those who participate voluntarily”.

The brewer also emphasises that the company “is working closely together” with various national and regional authorities, as well as with business and industry associations such as Cerveceros de España and FIAB.
Many ‘cañas’
With more than 1,500 employees, Heineken Spain has four factories in Seville, Madrid, Valencia, and Jaén. Together they produce about 10 million hectolitres per year. That corresponds to more than 10 million ‘cañas’ per day. A ‘caña’ is the smallest and most ordered beer in Spain.
