Balearic Islands want covid passport for everyone

The Balearic Islands want covid passports for travellers who reach the islands from the Spanish mainland. Until now, this passport was only intended for travellers from outside Spain.

By showing the digital passport, incoming travellers are exempt from the testing and quarantine obligation. This would also apply to residents of the Balearic Islands returning from a holiday on the Spanish mainland or abroad.

Until July 31, the region will continue to carry out checks at the airports and ports of all islands. Travellers who come from a Spanish region with a higher covid incidence than 60 per 100,000 inhabitants and do not have a covid passport, vaccination certificate or negative test result of no more than 48 hours old, must undergo a corona test on the spot. You can also opt for a 10-day quarantine.

No covid passport needed when returning from low-incidence area

The proposed measure still has to be approved by the Supreme Court of the Balearic Islands. The regions with a covid incidence lower than 60 are currently Valencia, Murcia, Extremadura, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia. The control measure therefore would not apply to travellers from these areas.

Also, the measure does not apply to residents of the Balearic Islands who have spent less than 72 hours outside their own region, even if they were in a region with an incidence of 60 or more. They only need to declare they are symptom-free.

The regional government has so far invested €14million  in carrying out checks at airports and ports. According to a spokesperson for the district government, efforts are being made to check all incoming travellers despite the increasing crowds.

Pick up physically or request online

Since last Monday, the digital covid passports on all islands of the Balearic Islands were available for collection from one of the distribution points. There are three in Mallorca, two in Menorca, one in Ibiza and another in Formentera. Since last Thursday, people could apply for the passport via its own patient portal. From July, the certificate will also be available via an app. From there it will be possible to download a QR code as proof of vaccination.

According to the EU directive, the digital covid passport is for: all persons who have had covid-19 in the six months prior to travel; persons who have received at least one dose of vaccine; persons with a negative PCR test result of up to 72 hours old, or a negative test result from an antigen test up to 48 hours old.
