The weather has been mild in Spain during Christmas. And, although it is still warmer than usual, the weather will be slightly different in the last days of the year due to the arrival of Atlantic storms. These will bring wind, rain and desert dust in some regions of Spain.
Although temperatures have dropped slightly, it is still generally 5 to 10 degrees warmer than what is normal for this time of year. However, quite a bit of rain is expected in parts of Galicia, Extremadura, Asturias and the Canary Islands from Wednesday.
Most extreme weather expected in Canary Islands
On Wednesday December 28, code yellow was issued along the coast of Galicia due to considerable gusts of wind. The Spanish weather service expects wind force 7 on average here. Code yellow has been issued on the Balearic Islands due to dense fog. The Canary Islands in particular are experiencing extreme weather. Code yellow applies all day to all islands due to strong winds of up to 100 km/h, which can cause quite high waves, especially on the western islands.
Face masks recommended in the Canary Islands
There is also a warning on all islands of poor air quality and reduced visibility due to desert dust moving over the islands. Sometimes visibility can be even less than 1,500 metres. This can also be harmful to health, which is why wearing face masks is recommended.
There are no weather alarms for the time being on Thursday 29 December. However, the rain from Galicia and Asturias is expected to slowly move over the rest of Spain. Rain is therefore expected on this day in the north of Madrid, Castile-La Mancha and Cantabria. Even in the west of Andalucia a shower or two could fall.
New Year’s Eve drives rain from Spain
On Friday 30 December, code yellow will apply again along the entire Galician coast due to strong winds. In the north and centre of Spain, the sun will barely show itself and quite a bit of rain is expected. On New Year’s Eve, the rain front seems to recede and only Galicia seems to be affected by this.
Furthermore, the Aemet briefly looks ahead to the first days of 2023. January looks like having a wet start for the time being with large rain fronts in the first few days of the new year.
