ALCUDIA – Everything indicates that Alcudia in Mallorca will restore cruise tourism in 2023. After four years of absence, three shipping companies have now asked to call at the island’s largest port after Palma.
However, there is still a restriction on the arrival of cruise ships in Mallorca and Ibiza. This measure was imposed by the government of the Balearic Islands to reduce the nuisance from cruise ships. According to Última Hora, these are three shipping companies that had chosen Alcudia as their destination from the start.
Since the autumn of 2022, only one cruise ship has called at this port. It is therefore expected that with the planned arrivals for 2023, the figures for 2018 can be restored. That year saw the highest number of cruises in recent years.
Pep Cladera, Alcúdia’s councillor for tourism, has stated that normality will return in 2023 and that he expects “the arrival of these cruise ships will benefit Alcudia”. He also expressed his wish for cruise passengers to visit the heritage and taste the varied gastronomy offered by the hospitality industry in his city.
Figures from recent years
As mentioned, only one cruise entered the port of Alcudia in the autumn of 2022. This was the first since the declaration of a state of alert for Covid-19. Moreover, the destination was already struggling before the pandemic due to the drop in demand.
According to the forecasts of the Port Authority of the Balearic Islands, the season for Alcudia will start on April 27 with the arrival of the first cruise passengers in this destination.
