Even in the high season month of June, a third of the hotels on the Costa Blanca and in Benidorm remain closed. Hotels heavily dependent on British tourism are most affected.
Nuria Montes, general secretary of the hospitality employers’ association Hosbec, announced the figures. Most of the British holidaymakers who choose Spain every year stay on the Costa Blanca. Benidorm hotels are the most popular destination on that coast. In Benidorm, the British make up almost half of all visitors.
Two scenarios for the arrival of the British
The hotel industry in that part of Spain is working on two scenarios for the arrival of Britons. The most optimistic hopes visitors from England, Scotland and Ireland arrive from the end of July. The second scenario is less positive and only counts on it towards the end of August.
Hope for July pinned on domestic tourism
The great hope of most entrepreneurs in the tourism sector for the month of July is now based on domestic tourism. Despite this, current reservations in domestic destinations, like the coast of Castellón, are at 50% compared to the same time in 2019, according to Hosbec’s vice president.
Weekly loss of €60 million
Every week that goes by without British tourism will cost the Valencia region a loss of around €60 million. The vice president of tourism organisation Exeltur made the claim at the round table which opened the eighth edition of the Tourism Conference in Benidorm.
