DENIA – The northern part on the coast of the province of Alicante between the towns of Dénia and Calpe is called the Marina Alta. It is better known as the Costa Blanca and is one of the most touristic areas of Spain.
It now appears that of all 47,403-holiday homes in the autonomous region of Valencia (with the provinces of Castellón, Valencia and Alicante) one in four is located in the Marina Alta (Alicante). In total, this concerns 12,172 homes for tourist use, according to the latest official data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE).
Five municipalities in the Marina Alta are among the 15 in the autonomous community with the highest number of holiday homes. Denia has the most. Only Valencia, Torrevieja and Alicante are above the capital of the Marina Alta by a small margin.
After Dénia, Calpe ranks fifth and Xàbia sixth for the most holiday homes. In those three places lies 17.5% of the total that lies in the entire Valencian Community. Two other municipalities in the region are among the top 25 places in the ranking. These are Benissa and El Poble Nou de Benitatxell. Similarly, four other municipalities have more than 100 vacation rentals: Els Poblets, Pedreguer, Pego and El Verger.

In other words, each of the 33 municipalities in the Marina Alta has at least one house for tourists. Please note that these are officially registered residences.
Consequently, the Marina Alta with 12,172-holiday homes makes up 25.7% of the total number of 47,403 tourist homes in the Valencian Community.
A new way of collecting information
INE has been trying to estimate the number of tourist accommodations in Spain with new experimental statistics since 2020. The institute is thus responding to the increased demand for information on this subject. The information is collected through web scraping techniques. Through software programs, INE extracts the data from the most used rental platforms in Spain.
