GIBRALEón – On Sunday afternoon, a 28-year-old man was killed and six others were injured after being hit by a car that drove at full speed onto the terrace where they were sitting in a village in the Andalucian province of Huelva.
The multiple accident happened in Gibraleón, 16 kilometres north of the city of Huelva. The driver, a young resident of the village, fled after the dramatic incident. A few hours later, he was arrested by the Guardia Civil and taken to the police station.
Just after 4.30 pm, several reports were received by the regional emergency number 112 about a multiple accident on Avenida de Andalucía in Gibraleón. It was reported a car had driven onto the terrace, dragging several tables where people were having lunch.
Police units, ambulances and a 061 trauma helicopter were immediately activated. They were supported by a team from the provincial fire brigade. Moreover, they were able to confirm the death of one person, a 28-year-old man, at the scene. Also the fact that six people were injured in the accident. No details were initially released about the seriousness of those injuries.

Search
Several witnesses were able to identify the driver, who fled after the accident. A large-scale search was immediately activated. This soon led to the man’s arrest. An investigation must now reveal what exactly happened.
Two days of official mourning
Gibraleón City Council has declared two days of official mourning for the multiple accident. As stated in the mayor’s decree, the period of mourning begins on October 10 at midnight and ends at 11.00 am on October 11. All official flags will be flown at half mast and all scheduled events will be suspended.
“Shock and Pain”
The message from the municipality states that the accident happened after the driver had “driven his vehicle at high speed on two terraces full of people in the centre of the village.”
An event that caused “shock and pain” to the local population and for which the municipality expressed its “sincere condolences” to the family of the deceased young man.
The driver of the car, which initially fled, is also a young resident of the city and is in custody pending the investigation.
